Mahalo to Daniel and Mana ai for the kokua they offered me in summer of 2011.... One week before my departure for a 6 week trip between British Columbia and Munich, Germany Mana 'ai hooked me up with 3 pounds of vacuum sealed packed pa'i'ai. I ordered three pounds, after two weeks in the refrigerator with the help of a kanaka who went to school at Standford University (and familiar with defrosting poi) we served 2 pounds of pa'i'ai turned poi. The trip to Canada was an exchange between the University of Hawaii at Manoa Indigenous Politics program and the University of Victoria Indigenous Governance program....at the end of the potluck no more poi...gone!

Three weeks later (total 5 weeks) I presented traditional foods of Hawaii (pa'i'ai, dried venison, pa'akai and 'awa). Instead of mixing the pa'i'ai into poi I just cut up the block and snipped up the dried meat. Because the food session was a 1 hour break everything needed to finger foods, everyone devoured the squared pa'i'ai, venison and pa'akai. Everyone loved the foods of Hawai'i and we were the only ones to show up with traditionally processed food.

Mahalo no ho'i e Mana'ai!

Aloha Daniel! In 2000, I left the islands, after living there for 30 years, to move to Washington State. Being an island girl, I had always enjoyed my Hawaiian food, especially laulau, lomi & poi! Purple, which is what I thought the color of poi was.
Though I loved it, I knew nothing of what poi really SHOULD BE. How can I ever go back?
Last month, we came home to visit and was offered the opportunity to make pai'i'ai through a mutual friend, Trevor. The short history lesson was informative. It made me want to learn more about the history of Poi or Pai'i'ai making. Thank you for welcoming me and my family into your home. Teaching us the basics of pounding pai'i'ai. You make it look effortless. Your act of generosity by sharing your personal poi "bowl" while we munched on dried salmon! How was the smoked salmon? Ono? Eh, anytime you like trade let me know! Thank you for the once in a lifetime experience! Aunty Mary, up in Washington =)

Aloha Daniel,
My partner Joe and I viewed your video on making a PapaKu'i'ai. So , the board is made. However, I have a few questions. I know we have to season the board so do we soak it in the ocean or will fresh water do? Secondly, after the soaking, do we rub the board with oil to seal it?
I have had the opportunity to try my skill at pounding poi. I boiled the kalo, cleaned it very meticulously and then started to ku'i the kalo. it wasn't easy but i tried and i will continue to do so until I get the technique and rhythm. My family loves the fresh poi and hve gotten spoiled. So, when my board is done I'll continue to practice,
Mahalo for inspiring me to appreciate all the hard work that goes into making poi. I will appreciate any words of wisdom you might share.
Aloha Aunty Ellen
